Cool Tools
If you're looking for truly unique, yet useful, toys for the chef
in your life, forget the chain stores. Instead, check out these local stores for kitchen products:
- Faraday's Kitchen Store in Lakeway is a whopping 4,000
square feet, which is just HUGE for us! The owners, Tony and Melissa, actually work in the store and are very, very
knowledgeable, which is imperative when you're buying a gift for a chef.
- Hollandaze Gourmet in Georgetown, which is just
a few miles north of Austin, is owned by Laurie Holland. She has amassed a fabulous array of cooking products that you
should definitely check out.
- Kiss the Cook is set in a charming 2,000
square foot house in Wimberley, which is just a few minutes west of Austin. Owners Janet and Brin have created an
inventory of products that are both useful and high-quality.
We've also found that the Cornerstone Hardware (3801 Bee Caves Road in Austin), Breed & Co, and Zinger Hardware are good places to find unusual
gift items for the foodie. And, in case you don't already know, Austin is soon going to have a
Sur la Table store at the corner of Mopac and Braker
Lane. A chain store, yes, but at least its a good one...
Do Some Research
Although you won't find many cooking-related products in it, we HIGHLY recommend you pick up the latest copy
of Rare Magazine. It is chock full of all
the coolest local stores in Austin and is a strong supporter of the small business sector. It is available all over town,
generally wherever you can find an Austin Chronicle.
And there's a new website in town. Or should I say, the state... Check out the
Texas Food and Wine Gourmet website for gourmet food, wine, and beer made in Texas. They've also got a great list of
recipes and places to visit in Texas if you're a foodie.
