Cowboy Saltburst
Our Cowboy Saltburst is a tip of the hat to
the cowboys of yesterday. Back then, they cooked with whatever they had on hand, which was usually
salt, pepper, sugar, and coffee. We like to cook simple foods in our own kitchen and we wanted a spice
that had coffee in it, which is how we came up with this spice.
How We Make It
- To make our Cowboy Saltburst, we blend Portuguese sea salt, coffee, turbinado sugar, and black pepper
together.
- Next, we zest some limes by hand and throw it in the mix.
- Then we throw in some Arbol chiles and bottle it all.
- The final step is to seal each bottle and the product
label. We write and
design all of our own labels and product literature and have it printed at a small local printer. When
possible, we use recycled paper.
Ingredients
Cowboy Saltburst contains Portuguese sea salt, coffee, black pepper, Turbinado sugar, Arbol
chiles, and fresh lime zest.
Recommended Uses
Despite the simple ingredients of our Cowboy Saltburst, it has a very complex flavor that transfers
onto your food. It starts with a nice peppery flavor and ends with a touch of sweet coffee. This
makes it an excellent spice for your favorite cut of meat, particularly steaks. When you grill with
the Cowboy Saltburst, the turbinado sugar will add a fine crusty glaze to the outside of the meat.
We've been using it on rice and sausage dishes, salads, squash, green beans, asparagus,
and chicken breasts. So far, it really shines when we put it on a ribeye just before we throw it on the
grill. The Cowboy Saltburst is also good on grilled fish, like salmon
or mahi-mahi.
